About
After years of multidisciplinary design work, designer Ryan Twardzik launched his own independent practice - unform studio - to focus on creating uniquely designed furniture highlighting not only the the aesthetics, but also the interaction and tactility inherent in good design. At the heart of the pieces lies an attention to craft, quality, and a commitment to local manufacturing in Pennsylvania, the capital of America’s finest furniture past and present.
Design is not just the aesthetic, not just being different for different’s sake.
By taking a total and comprehensive approach to each piece, unform studio’s furniture is built to highlight different levels of fun and interaction, through the exploration of multiple styles, varied materials, and exquisite craft. Though many pieces and collections may differ in their approach to final form, they are tied together through the idea that a successful design is the object in it’s totality, not the prioritization of single style over substance.
Following the famous sentiment from architect Robert Venturi - “Less is a Bore” - I seek through my furniture to bring back the pure joy of interaction between a person and an object. Beauty of an object speaks not just to the aesthetics, but also how it feels to use, to be around and to live with. I aim to elevate beauty as a guiding principle in design as it once was, while not eschewing the functionality and usability of these objects. For when joyful form and interaction combine with the usability and comfort one expects from an object, the design can be truly beautiful.
